During Wind and Rain

by Thomas Hardy

THEY sing their dearest songs--
He, she, all of them--yea,
Treble and tenor and bass.
And one to play;
With the candles mooning each face....
Ah, no; the years O!
How the sick leaves reel down in throngs!

They clear the creeping moss--
Elders and juniors--aye,
Making the pathways neat
And the garden gay;
And they build a shady seat....
Ah, no; the years, the years;
See, the white storm-birds wing across!

They are blithely breakfasting all--
Men and maidens--yea,
Under the summer tree,
With a glimpse of the bay,
While pet fowl come to the knee....
Ah, no; the years O!
And the rotten rose is ripped from the wall.

They change to a high new house,
He, she, all of them--aye,
Clocks and carpets and chairs
On the lawn all day,
And brightest things that are theirs....
Ah, no; the years, the years;
Down their carved names the raindrop plows.

Where I Come From

By David Nelson and Robert Hunter

Where I come from
You can read by the light of a star
Pass the Map Mahoney
It can't be all that far
I would know it anywhere
Sight unseen we're almost there
This smells like the air
Where I come from

Where I come from
All the roads are rocky and steep
And you aren't judged by the company you keep
I would know you anywhere
Salt sea breezes in your hair
No one to compare
Where I come from

Where I come
Smack on the demarcator line
If the sun don't rise, y'know
It ain't for lack of trying
Fed up rehearsing my part
Going to wing this one straight from the heart
The only place to start
Where I come from

Where I come from
Used to be a border state
Nothing but my reflection
On the dinner plate
Tonight I chose to dine alone
Me and the dog might share a bone
We don't waste a crumb

Where I come from

Afternoon on a Hill

I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one.

I will look at cliffs and clouds
With quiet eyes,
Watch the wind bow down the grass,
And the grass rise.

And when lights begin to show
Up from the town,
I will mark which must be mine,
And then start down!

-Edna St. Vincent Millay
...was staring at the little blotch of sunshine with a special intensity, considering lying down in it.

Another in the winter series...

Now Winter Nights Enlarge

by Thomas Campion

Now winter nights enlarge
This number of their hours;
And clouds their storms discharge
Upon the airy towers.
Let now the chimneys blaze
And cups o'erflow with wine,
Let well-tuned words amaze
With harmony divine.
Now yellow waxen lights
Shall wait on honey love
While youthful revels, masques, and courtly sights
Sleep's leaden spells remove.

This time doth well dispense
With lovers' long discourse;
Much speech hath some defense,
Though beauty no remorse.
All do not all things well:
Some measures comely tread,
Some knotted riddles tell,
Some poems smoothly read.
The summer hath his joys,
And winter his delights;
Though love and all his pleasures are but toys
They shorten tedious nights.

MThe Edge of the Wire

By David Nelson

It's just an ocean of dreams running over your cup
The big muddy river couldn't fill it up
and the most you can see looking out from inside
Is the edge of the wire on that great divide

Sometimes you just got to leave all your winnings aside
And sometimes you better let the truth be known
And you better believe it like a house on fire
Cause it's all part of life on the edge of the wire

The future has eyes that wait to gaze back at you
The tumbling dice can't wait to raise the confusion
It's heads they're winning, tails you're losing
So break out that can of kitty and Kumbaya to you
Just to get in trouble on a Saturday night
When everything rides on the edge of the wire

There's only one way to pay for your ticket to ride
And only one place to stay beside the waterside
When the cold light of day has you paralyzed with fright
As you wait for the night to catch up with you

You better keep it in mind walking through the wall of fire
It may not be best to cast away your desire
It's a steep incline, whether down or uphill
When all you got left is some time to kill

And if the future has eyes that wait to gaze back at you
The tumbling dice can't wait to raise a confusion
It's heads they're winning, tails you're losing
So break out that can of kitty
Just to get in trouble on a Saturday night
When Everything Rides on the Edge of the Wire

Out of the Rolling Ocean, the Crowd by Walt Whitman

Out of the rolling ocean the crowd came a drop gently to me,
Whispering, I love you, before long I die,
I have travell’d a long way merely to look on you to touch you,
For I could not die till I once look’d on you,
For I fear’d I might afterward lose you.

Now we have met, we have look’d, we are safe,
Return in peace to the ocean my love,
I too am part of that ocean, my love, we are not so much separated,
Behold the great rondure, the cohesion of all, how perfect!
But as for me, for you, the irresistible sea is to separate us,
As for an hour carrying us diverse, yet cannot carry us diverse forever;
Be not impatient – a little space – know you I salute the air, the ocean and the land,
Every day at sundown for your dear sake, my love.

It's time for poems of springtime.
Of renewal, and rediscovery.
Beginning, and restarting where we left off.
Time for forgiving and forgetting.
And forging life anew.
A new season lays at our feet.
May it bring the best of everything to you.
I can't come down, it's plain to see.
I can't come down, I've been set free.
Who you are, and what you do,
don't make no difference to me.
